Journal On Purpose to Ease Self-Judgment

Judgment is heavy

Write to make it lighter

Writing in a stream of consciousness is a great way to get some nonsense on paper. It doesn’t have to be poetic or lucid, it’s a stream, it just flows. Have you ever looked at a stream and thought it should be streaming better? Of course not. Save that criticism for rivers.

If you want to write and you write, that is already a win. If you write for two minutes, that is more than zero minutes and is a win. If you don’t write, get back on track and write. Gigantic win. What or how you write is gravy. If the gravy is delicious that’s wonderful, but even if it’s not it’s still the best friend your mashed potatoes ever had.

Leaning into accomplishment makes it easier and more enjoyable to sit and write in the first place. It helps you edit less and fires up your creativity, it opens the channels to your imaginative brilliance wide enough a Hummer with a mattress strapped to the roof could drive through it comfortably. And as you build this muscle of easing judgment you will see it spread to every other area of your life.

Judgment is heavy and cumbersome and never fits in the overhead storage compartment. It brings no joy, it helps no cause. Use writing to hone your vision to see what you have, what is beautiful, what is fulfilling and enlivening. You will remain aerodynamic and buoyant enough to reach any goal and enjoy the journey infinitely more.
