How it Works

Liz introduces creative concepts and deftly weaves therapeutic strategies into these sessions that quickly prompt us to reflect, reevaluate, be inspired, and be more productive.
— Andrea L.

to begin….

A week before your first one-hour session Liz will ask you to journal every day for 5 minutes.

week 1

You begin by discussing how the writing went. What was easy or difficult about it? This is where you will glimpse the shape of blocks, barriers, and defenses that get bent out of shape because you are challenging them to do something differently. You will discuss how to set up your writing practice for success, finding the ways and means to fit it into your life easily, so you can write about what you are starting to see in the mechanisms of your psyche. You will get writing prompts as homework during the entire program, and a mid-week recap email to keep you focused and energized.

week 2

“Now we’re cookin’” Liz might say, as she has a penchant for old-timey expressions. You will discuss the past week and any revelations that came through in your writing  - and there WILL BE revelations. Now you will look under your blocks to see what beliefs are driving them. Defense mechanisms are tricky, here is the chance to see what they are hiding from you. Perhaps you will journal mid-session for some on-the-spot clarity.

week 3

You will wander together down the streets of your subconscious as information floats to the surface in your writing, and Liz will guide you to access deep compassion, gentleness, and forgiveness. Visiting the birthplace of beliefs and fears along the tangled landscape of past experiences and your stories about them can be profound, and you will begin connecting things beneath your awareness that are actually driving your behavior.

week 4

And finally, you will have enough writing to see patterns emerging, good ones, bad ones, and ones that have no business being on wallpaper. This is the opportunity to shift. You will analyze dysfunctional repeated behaviors and combat the old beliefs driving them, and as your defenses loosen their grip you will start to see changes in your reactions to things, shifts in your decisions, and freedom in your choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

I always liked the idea of writing or journaling but it just never materialized. What happens if I work with Liz?

If you want to do something and don’t, there is something blocking you. It’s as simple as that. So before your first meeting, Liz will suggest that you find five minutes a day, every day, to write, and bring the results to the session. Perhaps your blocks show up as “I don’t have time,” “I don’t have anything or write about,” “I’m too tired,” or “I’d better watch that new Netflix limited series or those poor guys will go out of business!” These are your defenses showing up to distract you away from doing something you want to do that’s different than what you did yesterday. We will talk about them and all the other places they show up in your life, and as you see them for what they are they will weaken and lose their hold on you. We will figure out the easiest time and ways for you to journal and create some prompts tailored to understand your particular defenses, and as you step around them you will be free to write more often, more creatively, and more deeply.

I use my writing to vent about problems and DIY therapy. How can Liz help me?

While Liz is a therapist, this is not therapy. However, this program abides by similar rules in that your sessions are 100% confidential and you are able to speak freely in this safe, therapeutic space guided by a therapist who can help you spot dysfunctional patterns and behaviors not serving you. If you wish to look at your writing for information, learn how to write to explore it in deeper ways, and actively shift into healthier directions, you are in the right place. The work is designed for you to become adept at reflecting your own psyche back to yourself through your writing and then step away to continue on your own.

I’m not creative, what am I doing here?

You don’t need to own a BeDazzler to consider yourself creative, although I bet you have a super decked-out jean jacket. Perhaps the voice that says you are not creative is in fact a defense mechanism that is protecting you from trying, because if you never try you never fail, and if you never fail you never have to feel bad about failing. But if you’ve ever started a sentence with the words, “I have an idea...” you are creative, at least sometimes. Your writing practice will help you easily tap into creative thinking when you want to clear your mind for genius and come up with something new - an idea, a product, a way of communicating, or a new perspective on solutions. Writing a book is just one by-product of writing, there are many other benefits that come from quieting your mind and allowing your wild, colorful qualities to rise to the surface.

I’m creative but stuck, I paint or dance or cook or have several unfinished projects, how can a writing practice help?

A writing practice keeps your creative gears greased and ready to roll in whatever direction you wish so you will be able to keep moving forward even if your project appears stalled. Writing exercises help discover what’s really keeping you stuck, or allow your mind to make new neural pathways to find options your tired eyes can’t see when staring at the same project for too long. There is also Einstein’s concept of Combinatory Play which uses one creative endeavor to drive another, which you can read about here.

How much does it cost?

You get 4 individual, weekly 1-hour Zoom meetings and mid-week emails providing session recaps, support, and writing prompts. The subject line will read ‘Notes from our meeting” to protect your privacy and confidentiality, and the total cost is $500.

I have other questions not listed here, what can I do?

Contact Liz! Honestly, we can’t get her to shut up about this stuff. Set up a free, 10-minute Zoom consultation, or send her an email! Writing is about free-thinking and creative wandering, it naturally lends itself to flexibility and can be channeled in exactly the way you want it to be. Liz is up for the challenge, contact her about anything!

We meet each week to intentionally nurture a creative practice...It has helped my creativity and art take more of a center stage in my life.
